This tool loads @imgly/background-removal, which ships a neural network (an ONNX-format segmentation model, roughly 40MB) and runs it via WebAssembly directly in your browser tab — the same category of model a server-side tool like remove.bg would run on its own GPU, just executed locally instead. That first download is why the first image takes noticeably longer; the browser caches the model file afterward, so subsequent images only pay the inference cost, not the download.

Because it's a real segmentation model rather than a color-threshold trick (like the simpler algorithm the Passport Photo tool uses), it handles busy, non-uniform, and outdoor backgrounds — not just plain walls.

How does the AI background removal work?

Why does it take a while on first use?

The first use downloads the AI model (~40MB) which is then cached in your browser. Subsequent uses are much faster since the model loads from cache instead of downloading again.

What is manual selection mode?

Manual mode lets you draw on the image to select exactly which area to keep or remove — a green brush marks areas to keep, red marks areas to remove. Useful when the automatic AI segmentation gets an edge wrong on a complex image.

What image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP images are supported. The output is always a transparent PNG file for maximum compatibility.

Is there a file size limit?

Since processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device's memory. Most images under 10MB / 4000×4000px process without issues.
